Senior Women Win Silver at MLWP Finals

The Golden Jets senior women surprised everyone and came away with their first ever SILVER MEDAL at the recently concluded Major League Water Polo (MLWP) Finals.

In the semi-final, the Jets came away with a thrilling 12-11 shoot out win over the Ste. Foy Hydres.
The Hydres had beaten the Golden Jets during the regular season. In the game, the Jets jumped out to a 5-2 early second quarter lead. However, the offence then completely dried up and
Ste. Foy scored 6 consecutive times to take a 7-5 lead. The Jets finally scored late in regulation to tie the game at 8-8 and send it into overtime. In overtime, Ste. Foy took the lead in the second
overtime period and then Casey Pottier, in dramatic fashion, tied the game with 2 seconds left
on a beautiful top corner shot from 6 meters.

Then it was shoot out time. Each team chose 5 shooters. Ste. Foy's first shooter shot high and wide. Casey Pottier then scored on her penalty shot and the Jets had a chance. Ste. Foy's second shooter scored. Ainsley Vettese then scored for the Jets to restore the one goal lead. The third Ste. Foy shooter scored. Nicole Brown then shot wide and teams were back to even with two shooters remaining for each team. Then goaltender Petra Jory took over. She dived to her right to make a great two handed save on former national team member Valerie Dionne, the 4th Ste. Foy shooter. Brittany Sinclair then scored to give the Jets a one goal lead for the 3rd time in the shoot out. So, a miss by Ste. Foy on their 5th and final shooter would give the Jets the victory. Jory lunged with two hands high to her left and made a brilliant save and the Jets were through to the gold medal game!

The next day, the team appeared drained from the strain of the double overtime plus shoot out game from the day before and came out flat and disorganized against last year's champion, CAMO (Montreal). CAMO steadily built its lead with outside shooting and power play goals to go up 8-4 at half time. Not quitting, the Jets scored twice by half way through the 3rd quarter and closed to 8-6. However, a late goal on the power play put CAMO back up 9-6 and the Jets could not muster any more scoring opportunities and fell 10-6.

The silver medal is a great achievement and the team is even more motivated to go after the title next year.
