Golden Jets Senior Men & Women Qualify for MLWP Finals!
The Toronto Golden Jets qualified both senior men and senior women teams for the Major League Water Polo Finals for the second year in a row.
The men qualified with 3 games left in the season with a 10-8 win over Hamilton at UofT last Saturday. The Jets men were led by Tuna Tali who scored 7 goals! Then, the team traveled to York on Monday minus 7 regulars due to Reading Week and business trips and came away with a thrilling 8-7 win when back-up goalie Sal Musco scored as time ran out on a pool-length shot from his own goal. Alan Chung scored 4 goals to lead the Jets attack. On Wednesday, the Jets made it 3 wins in a row during the week defeating York again, this time at home, by a comfortable 9-3 score. Simon Porter scored 4 times for the Jets and Chung added a hat trick to give him 7 goals in two games. The team has one final game remaining in the regular season on Monday night at York in a game that will likely have no bearing on the final standings.
The senior women, playing their second last game of the season, needed at least a tie in their final two games against York to qualify for the post season. On Wednesday night, minus 3 starters (who travelled home for Reading Week) and with only one sub, the Jets women played valiantly and with great heart and came away with a 5-4 win to clinch a berth in the league finals. Nicole Brown, asked to play out of position as the team's primary center forward, and Olga Mayorova led the way with 2 goals apiece with Tanya Robinson collecting the winner late in the 4th quarter. Brittany Sinclair played a standout game on defence and goalie Breanna Gadzosa stymied the York shooters time and time again.
The MLWP Finals will take place in Montreal March 3-4. Four (4) mens and 4 womens teams qualified. The Golden Jets, DDO and CAMO each qualified both their men and women.
