Senior Men finish 5th at Canadian Nationals
The Golden Jets attended the Canadian Senior Mens national championships for the third year in a row and matched their 5th place finish from last year. The event took place May 27-30 in Montreal. The Jets were undermanned as numerous players who attend UofT had gone home for the summer and several other players were unavailable due to injuries, business and late exams.
So, coaches George Gross, Jr. and Paul Pottier took a team of only 11 players who had also never played together before. Veteran Jet Trevor Robinson was in goal. The team had three masters age players Som Seif (30+), Jamie Halla (30+) and Tom Kasanda (50+). Alan Chung, Simon Porter and Paulo Ruiz rounded out the regular Jets players. In addition, the team added two centralized players, John Conway and Edgardo Montes along with two Shadow players from Toronto, Rony Gros and Dusan Radojcic.
The Golden Jets opened the tournament early Thursday morning going up 6-1 before hanging on for a narrow 7-6 victory over York. Conway was the game's first star. The Jets then faced the powerhouse CAMO (Montreal) and stayed close at the half (3-5). However, conditioning and the lack of substitutes took its toll in the second half and the Jets bowed 9-17. Conway was the 3rd star of the game.
The next day, the Jets faced Gatineau in their second consecutive 8:00am start. Conway scored a hat trick to lead the Jets to an impressive 6-3 win. Chung, Kasanda and Gros each had one goal. Conway was the first star and Chung was the second star. Later that evening, the Jets rolled over Laval 11-5 with Conway again the first star scoring 5 goals. Radjocic (the second star), Chung and Gros each had two goals to round out the scoring.
The big game then came on Saturday with the quarter-final against Calgary. A 1-1 first quarter was a good start for the Golden Jets but a disastrous second quarter found the team training 1-6 at the half. Despite a furious 4th quarter comeback, the Jets fell short 5-8. Mon tes had a hat trick and was named third star with the other goals going to Seif and Gros.
The Jets' final game was on Sunday for 5th place and featured a rematch against Gatineau. The game was tight checking from the start as neither team wanted to make a mistake. The score was 1-1 at the half and then Gatineau went ahead 2-1 near the end of the 3rd quarter. However, Chung scored two beautiful goals in the 4th quarter and the Jets won 3-2 and won 5th place. Chung was named first star and Conway was the third star.
Considering the number of players missing from the starting line-up, the Jets seniro men performed admirably. Thanks to John Conway, Edgardo Montes, Rony Gros and Dusan Radojcic for joining on and meshing so well with the seven Jets who were able to go.
