Junior Golden Jets 6th at Michigan Senior Event
This past weekend, Zoran Petrovic took some of his youth and cadet players to compete at a strong senior men's tournament in Michigan. The team members were youth players Alon Gavity, Clem Law, Clay Law, Benson Chung and cadets Cosmin Glasser and Ron Vainstein. Seniors Julian Filice, Jamie Halla and Alan Chung added some experience to the 9-man squad.
The team opened against the strong hosts and lost 6-20 in an obvious mismatch. That game cost the team a chance to finish in the top 4 of the 12 teams in the tournament. The second game was against a Chicago masters team and the Jets handily won 21-6 to ensure finishing between 5th and 8th. The Jets' third game came against the 2nd place team from Group B, another masters-oriented senior team. The team started out down 0-3 in the first quarter but came back strongly to take the lead in the 4th quarter. Despite playing a man down for the final 2 and a half minutes of the game due to fouling out its 3rd player in the game, the Jets managed a 16-14 win. The win put them in the game for 5th-6th against Michigan State. Though the score was 6-6 at the half, the lack of subs combined with the Jets' 4th game in less than 24 hours was too much and the team fell 6-13 to finish a very respectable 6th.
Next up for the youth and cadets is an age group tournament in the USA July 9-11.
