Junior Golden Jets 6th at Michigan Senior Event

This past weekend, Zoran Petrovic took some of his youth and cadet players to compete at a strong senior men's tournament in Michigan. The team members were youth players Alon Gavity, Clem Law, Clay Law, Benson Chung and cadets Cosmin Glasser and Ron Vainstein. Seniors Julian Filice, Jamie Halla and Alan Chung added some experience to the 9-man squad.

The team opened against the strong hosts and lost 6-20 in an obvious mismatch. That game cost the team a chance to finish in the top 4 of the 12 teams in the tournament. The second game was against a Chicago masters team and the Jets handily won 21-6 to ensure finishing between 5th and 8th. The Jets' third game came against the 2nd place team from Group B, another masters-oriented senior team. The team started out down 0-3 in the first quarter but came back strongly to take the lead in the 4th quarter. Despite playing a man down for the final 2 and a half minutes of the game due to fouling out its 3rd player in the game, the Jets managed a 16-14 win. The win put them in the game for 5th-6th against Michigan State. Though the score was 6-6 at the half, the lack of subs combined with the Jets' 4th game in less than 24 hours was too much and the team fell 6-13 to finish a very respectable 6th.

Next up for the youth and cadets is an age group tournament in the USA July 9-11.

July 9-11 Age Group Tournament in USA

The Golden Jets have entered a 18&U as well as a 15&U team in a tournament in the USA next month. Players who are 15 or younger will be able to play on both teams. We need to finalize who is going and who is driving so please email George back ASAP at gg@gsquaredlicensing.com and let him know whether you as a player will be attending and whether you as a parent will drive.
The drive is less than 5 hours. This will be a great opportunity to play games against players of the same age. Girls are welcome to go and play on the boys teams.

Primarily Youth team off to Michigan June 25-27

Coach Zoran Petrovic will take a Golden Jets team comprised primarily of youth and cadet players to a strong senior mens tournament in Michigan this weekend (June 25-27). Seniors Jamie Halla, Alan Chung and Julian Filice will be joined by youth players Alon Gavity (goalie), Clem Law, Clay Law, Benson Chung and Marko Brasic (entering UofT this Fall) as well as cadet players Ron Vainstein and Cosmin Glasser. The preliminary round will see the Jets face the host 616 team and then the Chicago Whales masters team.

Senior Men finish 5th at Canadian Nationals

The Golden Jets attended the Canadian Senior Mens national championships for the third year in a row and matched their 5th place finish from last year. The event took place May 27-30 in Montreal. The Jets were undermanned as numerous players who attend UofT had gone home for the summer and several other players were unavailable due to injuries, business and late exams.
So, coaches George Gross, Jr. and Paul Pottier took a team of only 11 players who had also never played together before. Veteran Jet Trevor Robinson was in goal. The team had three masters age players Som Seif (30+), Jamie Halla (30+) and Tom Kasanda (50+). Alan Chung, Simon Porter and Paulo Ruiz rounded out the regular Jets players. In addition, the team added two centralized players, John Conway and Edgardo Montes along with two Shadow players from Toronto, Rony Gros and Dusan Radojcic.

The Golden Jets opened the tournament early Thursday morning going up 6-1 before hanging on for a narrow 7-6 victory over York. Conway was the game's first star. The Jets then faced the powerhouse CAMO (Montreal) and stayed close at the half (3-5). However, conditioning and the lack of substitutes took its toll in the second half and the Jets bowed 9-17. Conway was the 3rd star of the game.

The next day, the Jets faced Gatineau in their second consecutive 8:00am start. Conway scored a hat trick to lead the Jets to an impressive 6-3 win. Chung, Kasanda and Gros each had one goal. Conway was the first star and Chung was the second star. Later that evening, the Jets rolled over Laval 11-5 with Conway again the first star scoring 5 goals. Radjocic (the second star), Chung and Gros each had two goals to round out the scoring.

The big game then came on Saturday with the quarter-final against Calgary. A 1-1 first quarter was a good start for the Golden Jets but a disastrous second quarter found the team training 1-6 at the half. Despite a furious 4th quarter comeback, the Jets fell short 5-8. Mon tes had a hat trick and was named third star with the other goals going to Seif and Gros.

The Jets' final game was on Sunday for 5th place and featured a rematch against Gatineau. The game was tight checking from the start as neither team wanted to make a mistake. The score was 1-1 at the half and then Gatineau went ahead 2-1 near the end of the 3rd quarter. However, Chung scored two beautiful goals in the 4th quarter and the Jets won 3-2 and won 5th place. Chung was named first star and Conway was the third star.

Considering the number of players missing from the starting line-up, the Jets seniro men performed admirably. Thanks to John Conway, Edgardo Montes, Rony Gros and Dusan Radojcic for joining on and meshing so well with the seven Jets who were able to go.

High Schoolers Travel to Pittsburgh

In May, the Golden Jets high school players traveled to Pittsburgh to play in a highly competitive high school tournament. The Jets team was comprised primarily of players in Grades 9 and 10
with a couple of Grade 11 players while the other teams were comprised primarily of players in Grades 11 and 12. Nevertheless, the Jets players did themselves and the club proud. In their first game, they easily defeated Skyline HS (Michigan) and then ran into a very strong Navy HS team that made the Jets pay for missed power play chances with numerous counter-attack goals.
On the second day of competition, the Jets lost a close game to Pittsburgh HS and followed that up with a narrow loss to the Pittsburgh Masters team (players over the age of 30). The tournament was a good learning lesson for the players who saw first hand what coach Zoran Petrovic had been trying to teach them about the game.

Youth Team WINS in Ohio

In April, the Golden Jets Youth team bolstered by two seniors, Alan Chung and Paulo Ruiz,
traveled to Ohio to play in a senior mens tournament. On Saturday, the Golden Jets won twice defeating Akron (Ohio) and Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) handily. Sunday morning the Jets finsihed on top of their group with a victory over the Ohio Squirrels (Cincinnati) and then won the tournament in a thrilling shootout with Ohio University. Alon Gavity played goal for the Jets
and the other youth members included Clem Law, Clay Law, Ron Vainstein, Dima Botov, Cosmin Glasser, Stephen Lissock, Graham Jones, Benson Chung and Boris Jovanovic.
